Recording For Playback

This is an activity to identify the sounds from a work of art and evaluate the behaviors of self and others. This is an ongoing exercise and not just a one-time activity. The students’ activity should always be recorded/documented both as a learning tool and as a way of tracking their progress.

step 1

Explain that the classroom is now a studio. Prepare to record a classroom music activity (solo measures, musical conversations, downbeat/upbeat, etc.)

step 2

The recording must begin from silence. Remind the students that all art starts from nothing: whether it’s the blank page for a writer, the blank canvas for a painter or silence for a musician.

step 3

Record the activity and listen back. Students take notes on what they notice while they listen. Ask the students what they liked, what they would change. Go back to the first step.
