Transformation from 2D to 3D

The manipulation of two-dimensional materials to create three-dimensional structures. These skills can be used for individual small sculptures to large-scale set design.

Fold

Step 1

Match corners of bottom of page with corners of top of page. Slide index finger down middle and crease fold from middle to either side.

Step 2

Use the handle of the scissors to sharpen the fold.

Step 3

Fold bottom and top edges at 1/4” to create tabs to allow the folded paper to stand.

Pleat

Step 1

Fold page in half.

Step 2

Fold the page back over the center fold 1” from the center.

Step3

Make sure the edges are aligned by using the thumb to hold the fold in place, then crease from one edge to another.

Step 4

Fold the flap back on itself at a 1” width.

Step 5

Repeat steps 2-4 on the other half of the page to completely pleat the page.

Slot and tab

step 1

Fold page in half then fold 1/4” tabs
to allow paper to stand.

step 2

Cut a ½” slot into the center fold
with scissors.

Step 3

Insert a ½” wide strip of paper.

Step 4

Fold a 1/4” tab at the end of the strip
to prevent it from slipping out.

Step 5

Using scissors, cut another slot 1”
from the previous slot and insert the
other end of the strip in the 2nd slot.

Step 6

Fold tab on 2nd insert.

slot

Step 1

Check the thickness of the card stock.

Step 2

Measure ½” the distance from top to
bottom of card stock and draw a line
with a marker.

Step 3

Cut on both sides of the marker line
and remove the excess strip.

Step 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 on a second
piece of card stock. Slide pieces into
each other.

Step 5

Repeat steps 2 and 3 on a second
piece of card stock. Slide pieces into
each other.

variation

Cut slots into the cards and add
additional shapes of card stock to the sculpture.

score

Step 1

Open scissors as wide as possible
and wrap tape around one blade to
prevent injury.

Step 2

Gently drag blade across the surface
from one edge to another creating a
score that indents the surface but does
not pierce the paper.

Step 3

Fold card stock on the scored line.

Step 4

Turn card stock over and score the
other side and fold again. Continue this
process to give the undulating effect.
curl and tab

Step 1

Draw a line 1” from the bottom of the
card stock. Place card stock in one hand
and rub it around the edge of a table to
give an even curl.

Step 2

Cut from the bottom of the page up to the
drawn line in ¼” intervals across the
bottom. Fold tabs in and out, alternating
across the bottom.

Step 3

Attach ends of curled page into a
cylinder and prop up.
