Value is the degree of lightness or darkness in a piece of art. Value is synonymous to tone in music.
Value Scales Through Drawing Techniques
Step 1

Make six even squares across bottom of paper to allow space for six different values. Begin in the 2nd box from left. Hold marker directly above square and lightly touch marker tip to paper, creating even dots.
Step 2

This will be the lightest value after white. Count approximately 20 dots over each square inch of the box.
Step 3

The 3rd box will be slightly darker in value. Count approximately 40 dots over each square inch of box.
Step 4

The 4th box will be slightly darker in value. Count approximately 60 dots over each square inch of box.
Step 5

Count approximately 80 dots per square inch for box 5, and approximately 100 dots per square inch for box 6.
Step 1

Trace a circle above value scale with a roll of tape. Draw a sun symbol in left-hand corner to indicate light source.
Step 2

Place ruler coming from sun and extend to side of circle. Mark where ruler touches the circle on both sides. This will help to show where the light falls and where it does not reach.
Step 3

Start on bottom right side and stipple dots in densely. Follow form of circle. This helps the circle appear three-dimensional.
Step 4

Gradually start making dots more interspersed as they move to top left side of circle.
Step 5

Be sure to leave some areas white that are in the direct path of light source. This is called the hot spot.
